Catholic Charities Appeal celebrating 60 years

Dear Friends,

The response to the 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal can be summed up in one word – AMAZING. Yet again, you have answered the call to support your brothers and sisters in need. What began as a $2 million appeal 60 years ago has flourished into an Appeal that raised over $13 million. From the bottom of both of our hearts, thank you.

Though much has changed in the last 60 years, one thing has not. As it did in 1958, the 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal continues to help those who have been marginalized and cast aside.

We invite you to read these pages and rejoice in what has been accomplished. None of this would have been possible without you. Your support was much more than the amount on your pledge card. Your generosity fed the hungry, gave shelter to the homeless and comforted the afflicted. Your kindness was truly a celebration of 60 years of Giving Hope to All.

Gratefully yours,

Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.

Catholic Charities Appeal is committed to transparency and stewardship of your gifts. This is why we do our best to keep all fundraising, administrative and investment fees low. With all of these expenditures included, the Appeal operates at an efficiency of $0.16 per dollar raised. As a recognized authority, the Better Business Bureau indicates that total fundraising expenses not exceed $0.35 per dollar raised. While the Catholic Charities Appeal’s total costs are considerably below this benchmark, we continuously strive for additional fundraising efficiencies.

The Catholic Charities Appeal is recognized as a non-profit institution. As such, all gifts are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. It has its own Employer Identification Number (EIN) and receives a separate financial audit. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia affirms that no funds donated during this Appeal will be used to support the independent reconciliation and reparations program or associated expenses.

CCA Special Initiatives

  • Thanks to the incredible donors of the Catholic Charities Appeal, Nutritional Development Services (NDS) is able to provide food and hope for thousands of people and families in need across the Archdiocese. For the 6th year in a row, CCA has partnered with NDS on a special Thanksgiving initiative. We are happy to report that $287,600 was raised from more than 4,200 gifts.
  • Across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia there are four Schools of Special Education supported by the CCA. These schools provide hope to students with disabilities and their families. The CCA was proud to partner with the Schools of Special Education on a spring initiative focused on students’ needs and tuition assistance. As a result of this special spring request, 3,300 gifts totaling $223,494 was raised for the schools.
  • Valuing seniors as a treasure is the heart of the mission of Catholic Housing and Community Services. The CCA was humbled to help promote their vital work in caring for our seniors through their housing options, senior centers, older care management, in-home support and more. Through the generous support of over 2,200 donors, $156,667 was raised to help provide for our seniors.

CCA Challenge Match

In 2018, the Connelly Foundation pledged to match all qualifying donations up to $180,000 for the Catholic Charities Appeal. A very special thank you goes to the Connelly Foundation for their kind support. In response to this challenge, over 300 donors generously responded with new gifts or increased giving to help us exceed the financial goal needed to receive the match. Thank you to all who donated! You helped double your impact within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and supported hundreds of thousands of individuals in need.

Catholic Social Services

When you donate to the Catholic Charities Appeal, you are truly changing someone’s life for the better. You are giving them hope. Take a walk down the halls of the Day Programs at Our Lady of Fatima and you will see just one example of how your gift is making a difference. The Day Programs provide a safe, caring environment that allows individuals with disabilities to create meaningful and independent lives.

Five days a week, you will find the residents of the Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence (DGDP) bustling throughout. The Day Programs offer many different activities, from vocation and training experiences to pet therapy sessions. The program uses a variety of activities, group engagement, and community outings to work on individual goals that are developed yearly through a multi-disciplinary process.

The men and women of DGDP love their days spent at the Day Programs. It provides purpose and a sense of happiness to know they are among their peers learning a new skill set.

Thank you for supporting the Catholic Charities Appeal. You are truly giving the gift of hope to those that need it most.

“I love coming to Our Lady of Fatima Day Program to work. I get to meet different people and I love working for my community.”

Special Education

"I am so grateful to the Catholic Charities Appeal for supporting the four Schools of Special Education. My grandchildren attend Archbishop Ryan School for the Deaf and without the Appeal’s support a Catholic education would not exist for my grandchildren. We are also thankful for Sr. Kathleen Schipani, IHM and Fr. Sean Loomis who, in part through Catholic Charities, are supported in their ministry to the Deaf Community through the Deaf Apostolate. I applaud the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Catholic Charities for being committed to the most vulnerable souls, our children and grandchildren with disabilities.”

- Patricia Pomroy, Custodial Grandparent for Robert and Rachael Pomroy

Nutritional Development Services

Thanks to generous donations to the Catholic Charities Appeal, Nutritional Development Services (NDS) had the wonderful opportunity to share a stipend with NDS-participating organizations interested in starting a community garden. Each spring, this “seed money” allows sites to purchase raised beds, soil, small equipment, seeds and other materials necessary for a small garden. Here they can grow fruits and vegetables while cultivating fellowship within their community. Last year through your support of the CCA, St. Gabriel’s Hall received financial support to construct 40 garden beds to assist with their Farm to Table initiative. The young men at the Hall are learning to cultivate fresh produce, sustainable farming practices, and new skills in the culinary setting, as they use the produce in their culinary coursework.

“We are in the planning stages for Spring/Summer 2019! We can't thank NDS enough for helping us to make our vision a reality. This is a bigger blessing than anyone realizes. We have been planning this move for most of our careers together and to see it all come to fruition is like a literal dream come true.”

- Chef Eileen, Culinary Arts Instructor & Coordinator of the Farm to Table initiative

#GivingTuesday – The Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence

In 2018, the Catholic Charities Appeal selected the Communities of Don Guanella and Divine Providence (DGDP) as its official beneficiary for #GivingTuesday. #GivingTuesday is an international day of giving held on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving.

DGDP are part of the Developmental Programs Division of Catholic Social Services within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. The organizations are dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals with intellectual and physical disabilities. In partnerships with families, employees, and volunteers, their programs provide a continuum of care offering a wide range of programming options including Community and Campus-Based Living Arrangements, Life Sharing Through Family Living, In-Home Supports, Respite Care, and Day Programs.

The CCA was proud to present DGDP with a check for $8,095 to help purchase much-needed assistive technology for these programs. Assistive technology can have a significant positive effect in helping individuals with disabilities progress towards the goals outlined in their Individual Program Plans. Some examples include computer programs and tablet applications that provide text-to-speech/speech-to-text, word prediction capabilities, and graphic organizers.

“I have a disability – Yes, that’s true. But all that really means is I may have to take a slightly different path than you.”

– Don Guanella resident

Thanks to generous donors like you through the Catholic Charities Appeal. our tuition is comparable to other schools in the Diocese. This not only helps us give Ella the excellent education she deserves, it also allows us to send our other daughters to Catholic school, too. We do not have to make a choice.

Official Kick-Off Celebration

Archbishop Chaput officially kicked-off the 2018 Catholic Charities Appeal – 60 Years of Giving Hope to All – to our beneficiaries, donors and supporters on February 6, 2018 at Springfield Country Club. Nearly 100 guests attended the reception to learn more about the 2018 Appeal and beneficiaries. Speakers included David Ripsom, Catholic Charities Appeal Board President; Amy Stoner, Director of Community-based and Homeless Services, Catholic Social Services; and Christine Nicholl, mother of a student who attends Our Lady of Confidence Day School.

Catholic Charities Appeal Night with the 76ers

The Catholic Charities Appeal once again partnered with the Philadelphia 76ers to bring CCA Night to the Wells Fargo Center. CCA Night was held on March 29, 2018. We are happy to report that 261 tickets were sold, raising $2,290 for the Appeal! Through your generosity, Ella from Our Lady of Confidence Day School was featured on court with her family to receive a customized Sixers jersey! Also, students from Saint Katherine Day School and Catholic Social Services Out-of-School Time Program had the opportunity to high five the players as they entered the court.

Catholic School Students for Catholic Charities Appeal

The annual Catholic School Students for Catholic Charities Appeal (CSS4CCA) Collection Celebration was held on May 15, 2018 at Cardinal O’Hara High School. We are thrilled to announce that the 2018 CSS4CCA initiative raised a record-breaking grand total of $71,701.91!

The CSS4CCA Collection Celebration gathered both elementary and high schools throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to celebrate the CCA and the four Schools of Special Education.

New for 2018 was a video challenge. Students were asked to create a fun, short video explaining why their school was supporting the Schools of Special Education. A panel of judges voted on the best video from the contest. Holy Trinity Elementary School and Cardinal O’Hara High School each won for their category.

The 2018 CSS4CCA collection winners were Our Lady of Calvary School with a total of $4,000 raised, and Archbishop John Carroll High School with a total of $10,000 raised.

Catholic Charities Appeal Night with the Phillies

The 6th annual Catholic Charities Appeal Night with the Philadelphia Phillies was held on Monday, June 25, 2018 at Citizens Bank Park. In total, 848 tickets were sold for CCA Night raising $8,480 for the Appeal! This is a record breaking number of tickets sold for Catholic Charities Appeal Night!

The National Anthem was sung by students from the Our Lady of Calvary School Choir and the first pitch was thrown out by Tariq, a 3rd Grade student who attends the Mayfair Out-of-School-Time Program. A two-minute CCA promotional video also played prior to the start of the game.

Thank you to everyone who supported this night!

Project Magis is a networking group of legal and financial services professionals dedicated to helping others in the local community by supporting the Catholic Charities Appeal. The initiative was inspired by the success of Catholic Renewal New York which was started by senior professionals in New York City corporate restructuring community.

Project Magis hosted its inaugural cocktail reception to benefit the Catholic Charities Appeal at the law offices of Blank Rome LLP on Monday, October 22, 2018.

Thanks to Blank Rome’s hospitality and the generosity of members of the Planning Committee, 100% of the proceeds from this event went to support the Catholic Charities Appeal beneficiaries, specifically Catholic Social Services and the four Schools of Special Education. The CCA is thrilled to announce that $117,210 was raised from this inaugural event.

For 60 years, the Catholic Charities Appeal has been providing hope to thousands across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. When you give to the Catholic Charities Appeal, you are directly impacting our beneficiaries. The following Giving Societies were established to celebrate the generosity and loyalty of our donors. Without you, the Catholic Charities Appeal would not have been able to reach our goal of $12.5 million, helping thousands of our brothers and sisters in need. Thank you for your generosity and dedication to the Catholic Charities Appeal.

"The Catholic Charities Appeal would not be able to advance its mission without your continued generosity and support. Your gift means more resources to provide help and create hope for the poor and vulnerable people in our communities. Thanks to you, tens of thousands of individuals in the Philadelphia area received support from CCA. Thank you for your kindness!"
