Catholic Charities Appeal celebrating 60 years

Dear Friends,

We are excited to share with you that the 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal has raised $10,354,300! For the 7th consecutive year, the Appeal has raised over $10 million. This benchmark was reached because of your dedication and commitment to help your brothers and sisters in need.

We take this time to reflect on all those who were impacted by your generosity. Together we have fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, educated children and provided over 180 vital programs to more than 925,000 people in the Greater Philadelphia Area. All this remarkable work was accomplished because you answered God’s call.

Both of us are pleased to share these pages with you that detail the extraordinary work made possible by your kindness this year. Being part of this Appeal has shown us what happens when our community comes together under one mission. Your gift to the Appeal has gone beyond a monetary amount. You have truly given hope to all.

We have both enjoyed our time with the Catholic Charities Appeal and wish our predecessors the best.

Gratefully yours,

Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Philadelphia

The Catholic Charities Appeal is committed to transparency and stewardship of your gifts. This is why we do our best to keep fundraising, administrative and investment fees low. With all expenditures included, the Appeal operates at an efficiency of $0.16 cents per dollar raised. As a recognized authority, the Better Business Bureau indicates that total fundraising expenses do not exceed $0.35 cents per dollar raised. While the Catholic Charities Appeal’s total costs are considerably below this benchmark, we continuously strive for additional fundraising efficiencies.

The Catholic Charities Appeal is recognized as a non-profit institution. As such, all gifts are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. It has its own Employer Identification Number (EIN) and receives a separate financial audit. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia affirms that no funds donated during this Appeal will be used to support the independent reconciliation and reparations program or associated expenses.

CCA Special Initiatives

  • Nutritional Development Services (NDS) provides food for thousands of people and families in need across the Archdiocese. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, not only is NDS providing food, but they are providing hope. We are happy to report that $307,741 was raised from more than 4,400 gifts through the special Thanksgiving initiative between the CCA and NDS.
  • Thanks to the incredible donors of the Catholic Charities Appeal, the four Schools of Special Education within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia receive vital tuition assistance and support. These schools shine a light of hope for families with children who have disabilities and specialized needs. In 2019, $181,665 was raised from more than 2,800 gifts for the Schools of Special Education.
  • Seniors are a vital part of our community that we greatly treasure and respect. Catholic Housing and Community Services help cherish senior citizens by providing housing options, senior centers, older care management, in-home support and more. Through the generous support of our donors, $154,814 was raised from 2,090 gifts to provide for our seniors.

“Please know of my sincere thanks for your faith filled and faithful support of the 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal,Giving Hope to All. Your generosity and your prayers help support our mission that served over 250,000 people last year. Many of these are those most vulnerable in our local communities including the hungry, the homeless, at-risk youth, the intellectually disabled and so many more. Your support provides help and creates hope for all the many who turn to the charitable programs of the Church in their times of greatest need.“

– Jim Amato, Secretary, Catholic Human Services

“When you walk into the doors of Casa del Carmen, you automatically feel like you're family. I feel safe leaving my child in the hands of the staff here, knowing that they will take care of my son and treat him like one of their own. When they say it takes a village to raise a child, Casa del Carmen feels like my village. They are helping to grow him intellectually, socially spiritually, and emotionally. I am grateful and thankful to have been able to send my son to Casa del Carmen Academy and this would not have been possible without the support of Catholic Charities Appeal donors. I don’t know what I would do without Casa. From the bottom of my heart – thank you for supporting the CCA. You are giving my son a brighter future.”

– Casa del Carmen client

“On any given day this past year, some fifty ill and elderly priest-residents at Villa Saint Joseph directly experienced God’s grace in the very tangible form of donors’ support through the Catholic Charities Appeal. I personally count myself so blessed and many times over, too. This past year, I have enjoyed immediate daily support from a true community of highly professional staff as well as volunteers. The priest residents have peace of mind from 24- hour nursing supervision/support, a well-cared for and safe, comfortable, cheerful living space. We have had an enriching community life as a “family” of brother priests. We share daily Mass and a rich prayer and devotional life, great conversations about daily events, varied and nutritious meals, and social events. With Catholic Charities support, we maintain a strong sense of “family” spirituality and security even when times get tough. Thank God for the Catholic Charities Appeal. God bless you, our donors, and caregivers at Villa Saint Joseph, our family home.”

– Reverend Gerald C. Ronan

Official kick-off celebrations

The 2019 Catholic Charities Appeal officially kicked-off to our beneficiaries, donors and supporters in February at two separate events held at Springfield Country Club and the Empress Room at St. Helena Parish. Archbishop Chaput and Bishop McIntyre along with our CCA Board President, Linda McDonough, and beneficiaries spoke on behalf of the Appeal and introduced the 2019 initiative.

Catholic Charities Appeal night with the Flyers

The Catholic Charities Appeal partnered with the Philadelphia Flyers to bring CCA Night to the Wells Fargo Center on Monday, February 11th, as the Flyers played the Penguins. We are happy to report that over 100 tickets were sold to the game and through your generosity, Madeline from Archbishop Ryan Academy for the Deaf was able to visit the penalty box during player warm-ups and students from Holy Innocents OST performed on the concourse prior to the start of the game.

Catholic Charities night with the Sixers

CCA Night with the Philadelphia 76ers was held on Wednesday, April 10th! Through your generosity, over 100 tickets were sold to the game and avid sports fan, Ed from Don Guanella, was honored on the court prior to the start of the game. Students from the four Schools of Special Education were in attendance and took part in the 76ers high-five tunnel! Thank you to everyone who supported this amazing night!

CCA Express

All aboard the CCA Express! On Monday, May 13th, Catholic Charities Appeal supporters hopped on board the CCA Express to visit several beneficiary sites. The day started with morning Mass at St. Kevin’s parish. Guests then headed to the Delaware County Family Service Center to visit with the coffee club clients and Martha’s Choice Marketplace. The tour ended at Saint Katherine Day School where guests had the special treat of having lunch with the students.

CCA night with Phillies

The 7th annual Catholic Charities Night with the Philadelphia Phillies was held on Friday, June 21st, at Citizens Bank Park. In total, 725 tickets were sold for CCA Night. In addition to being selected as the 50/50 raffle winner, over $14,000 was raised for the CCA through this partnership! The first pitch of the game was thrown out by Keira from St. Gabriel Out-of-School Time Program and a two-minute CCA promotional video played prior to the start of the game to the sold-out crowd!

Catholic school students for catholic charities appeal

High school students from across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia raised more than $72,000 for the annual Catholic School Students for Catholic Charities Appeal (CSS4CCA) initiative. All funds collected for CSS4CCA will directly support the four Schools of Special Education within the Archdiocese: Our Lady of Confidence School, St. Katherine Day School, Archbishop Ryan Academy for the Deaf and St. Lucy School for Children with Visual Impairments.

The high schools took part in fun and creative fundraisers to raise money for the initiative! They hosted Penny Wars at their Spirit Nights, had dance-a-thons, sold t-shirts, and had volleyball and basketball tournaments! Thanks to all the schools for their unique ideas to get their student community involved in a wonderful cause!

NDS fresh produce

Thank you for supporting the NDS Fresh Produce Initiative! Through your generosity we are humbled to announce that $11,175 was raised for families in need. This initiative helped children in low-income families across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia receive nourishing fruits & vegetables all summer long.

With the money raised, NDS was able to set up fresh produce stands at various sites to provide families with fresh fruits and vegetables that they normally would not be able to afford and access. Along with the fresh produce, clients receive vital nutritional information and sample healthy recipes. This gives families an opportunity to learn more about healthy eating habits which promotes a strong immune system and can help kids focus and perform better.

Project Magis Members

Project Magis is a networking group of legal and financial services professionals dedicated to helping others in the local community by supporting the Catholic Charities Appeal. Project Magis assists people in need by addressing issues such as hunger, homelessness, addiction and more through fundraising events. Project Magis hosted its Second Annual Cocktail Reception to benefit the CCA, at the law offices of White and Williams LLP on Monday, October 7, 2019.

The Honorable Kevin J. Carey (Ret.) was honored with the Inaugural 2019 Magis Award. The Magis Award is given to individuals in the Greater Philadelphia business community who, regardless of creed, have demonstrated respect, dignity, kindness, and humility toward others in the performance of their duties and in their profession. Honorees are committed to service rooted in solidarity and justice, increasing common good by doing more for others, and creating a better society and life for those around them.

Thanks to White and Williams LLP hospitality and the generosity of the members of the Planning Committee, 100% of proceeds from the event went to support the CCA, specifically the four Schools of Special Education and Catholic Social Services. The CCA is humbled to announce that over $117,000 was raised from this amazing event.

#GIVINGTUESDAY - Mercy Hospice

In 2019, the Catholic Charities Appeal partnered with The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia to raise funds for Mercy Hospice. Mercy Hospice is a CCA beneficiary of Catholic Social Services. They are a community grounded in faith and service where single women and mothers with children, experiencing homelessness and in recovery can find opportunities for new beginnings. Through your generosity, over $5,000 was raised to help the women of Mercy Hospice continue their road to recovery. Donations helped provide clothing, meals, essential kitchen and bathroom supplies, bedding and children’s clothing to the women of Mercy. We are so grateful for your kindness during this year’s #GivingTuesday initiative.

“It is with great joy that I have been welcomed back to Philadelphia. It is truly an honor to serve as the new Archbishop of this wonderful Archdiocese. The Catholic Charities Appeal has been providing for this community for over 60 years. I see the impact that your commitment to the poor and most vulnerable has made and I am so appreciative of your generosity. The Catholic Charities Appeal grants us all an opportunity to be guided by God and answer his call to serve. Together, I look forward to giving hope to all who need it.”

– Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez

For over 6 decades, the Catholic Charities Appeal has been providing hope to thousands across the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. When you support the Catholic Charities Appeal, you are directly impacting our beneficiaries. The following Giving Societies were established to celebrate the generosity and loyalty of our donors. Without you, the CCA would not have been able to raise over $10,000,000, helping thousands in need. Thank you for your generosity and dedication to the Catholic Charities Appeal.
